Former Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug says “to anyone who thinks Lewis Hamilton is already finished, I’ll be happy to describe in next year’s columns that things turned out very differently”.

Former Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Norbert Haug has been a key person during Mercedes’ partnership with McLaren, and a fundamental part of Mercedes’ return to Formula 1 as a works team.

As such he is the perfect person to give his opinion on Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton’s chances in 2023.

In his year-end column for The RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND), Haug says he expects both to return to the top next year.

“Mercedes will not start as badly in 2023 as [they did] in 2022, which will not make Ferrari’s life under new management any easier,” the German wrote.

“I’m sure that Mercedes will challenge Red Bull Racing in the new season and want to win back the world titles for both the drivers and the constructors.

“The Silver Arrows will pursue this goal methodically and uncompromisingly. The sting of the experiences from 2022 is as deep in Brackley as in Brixworth.

“And to anyone who thinks Lewis Hamilton is already finished, I’ll be happy to describe in next year’s columns that things turned out very differently.

George Russell is an absolute top driver – the best prerequisites in the record world champion team, so they both will spur each other on to top performances,” Haug concluded.
