The possibility that Mercedes reserve driver Nyck de Vries could be joining Formula 1 in 2022 has been mentioned several times during the 2021 silly season. Unfortunately he didn’t get that opportunity.
2020/2021 Formula E champion Nyck de Vries has been mentioned as a possible replacement for George Russell at Williams several times during the 2021 silly season.
In the end the seat went to Red Bull junior driver Alex Albon, which was somewhat of a surprise considering Williams is a Mercedes customer team.
Austrian publication LAOLA1 asked de Vries if it was a big disappointment for him?
“First of all, I was delighted and really impressed that my name was even mentioned among the candidates,” the Dutch driver said.
“That confirms how my potential is seen. So much is changing so quickly. A lot of what happened is beyond my control.

“I can only contribute something through my performances on the tracks. I can’t influence what happens outside.
“I’m happy with what I’m able to do right now and racing for titles.
Nyck then revealed he is no longer actively seeking a seat in Formula 1.
“Every young driver has that dream. I would be lying if I said I’m not aspiring to reach Formula 1 anymore or that I’m giving up on my dream.
“But I’m not actively working towards it anymore. Next year is a new season, let’s see what happens.
“I will do my job as best I can,” de Vries concluded.
