Mercedes Formula E driver, and F1 reserve driver, Nyck de Vries says he is not sure if being affiliated with the team is preventing him from getting an F1 seat.
There’s no denying that Nyck de Vries is a great driver. The 26-year-old won the 2019 Formula 2 Championship, and in 2021 he became the first ever Formula E World Champion with Mercedes.
The Dutchman also competes in endurance racing and has tested for IndyCar, where he went fastest.
However, this is yet to land him a seat in Formula 1. He is currently an F1 reserve driver for Mercedes, and some are suggesting that his ties with the German team are preventing him from getting an opportunity to make his racing debut with a different team.
“I don’t know,” de Vries said when asked if his ties to Mercedes could be a problem.
“There is always a lot of talk in Formula 1. There is news all the time. But the only way I can keep my career going is to keep performing on the track.
“That is the most important thing. And that’s regardless of who I drive for.”

For now, de Vries will try to defend his Formula E title in the 2021/2022 season, and then he’ll see what the future holds.
“I am incredibly grateful for everything I can do at the moment. I’m really enjoying the combination of Formula E and endurance racing right now.
“I just don’t know what will happen in the future. I am a very realistic person and concentrate on the present.
“I’ve also had the experience: things sometimes change very quickly. That’s why I’m looking forward to the new season.
“Then we will compete with Mercedes to defend the title. And I’m sure: if I continue to perform at my best, there will be new opportunities.
“Where, I don’t know. Time will tell,” concluded the Dutch driver.
