A petition to right the wrong that was done to Lewis Hamilton at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has gained traction again, and is now nearing 100,000 signatures.
At the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, F1 race director (at the time) Michael Masi chose not to follow the rules which govern the use of the Safety Car in the final laps of the race, and this allowed Max Verstappen to easily overtake Lewis Hamilton, who was on much older tyres, and claim victory and the 2021 championship.
After the race several fans aired their displeasure with what had happened by setting up petitions aiming to overturn the results. One of those petitions has recently started gaining traction again, and is now nearing 100,000 signatures (almost 97,000 as of this writing).
This is how the creator of the petition explained his goals:
“I believe that justice was not served on Sunday December 12, 2021 when the FIA stewards denied Lewis Hamilton of his win of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix,” he wrote.
“With less than 1 lap remaining, some lapped cars were allowed to pass the safety car, which does not comply with the rules of the F1 sport.

“This gave rival opponent Max Verstappen the opportunity to overtake Lewis Hamilton and win the Grand Prix. If you are an advocate of justice, honesty and fairness, please sign this petition.
“Leaving this decision as it stands will send a very wrong message to youngsters and future racers,” he concluded.
Fans started to share the petition again after the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, which ended under the Safety Car, further highlighting how wrong the decisions made in Abu Dhabi were.
It is not very likely that the petition can change the results of that race, or even get acknowledged by the FIA and Formula 1, but it’s nice to know that a lot of people still care about the injustice that happened back in 2021.
