La Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere della Sera both report that a deal between Mercedes and Carlos Sainz is close to being done.

The F1 media has been speculating for weeks on who will replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025.

Now, Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport reports the team is close to reaching a deal with Carlos Sainz, the driver Hamilton is replacing at Ferrari.

Corriere della Sera confirms the same story and adds that an official announcement is expected within weeks if an agreement is reached.

It is also reported that Mercedes is offering a 1+1 deal, meaning that the team will have the option to replace Sainz ahead of the big rule change in 2026.

This would allow the team to promote their junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, if he lives up to their expectations in Formula 2, or try to go after Max Verstappen for 2026.

Although this report has been quoted by a lot of F1 media outlets, it has to be taken with a grain of salt, as there are various rumours swirling around right now regarding Mercedes’ vacant seat.
