George Russell says returning Valtteri Bottas’ “experience driving Ferrari power units” could “be key” for Mercedes, and opens up on their previous ‘tensions’.

2025 has marked Valtteri Bottas’ return to Mercedes, after three years with Sauber (Alfa Romeo, Stake F1).

Although George Russell and Valtteri had some unpleasant experiences on the track in the past (their crash at Imola in 2021 which culminated in harsh words being exchanged), the Briton says this is all in the past now.

“Obviously years ago we were perceived to not have a strong relationship,” George said.

“But, we are both professionals, and our relationship has grown. We often travel together and see each other at hotels or in the gym.”

“I think we would be able to make something pretty extraordinary from the two!”

Returning to a serious tone, George said Valtteri’s experience will be crucial for Mercedes, especially his experience driving Ferrari power units for three years.

“His experience is going to be massive. Having someone with so much simulator and racing knowledge, and who fully knows the team is going to be great.

“Hearing about his last few years at Sauber, with the Ferrari engine could be key too.

“You always have to keep an open mind as to what others are doing and he has all of that under his belt,” Russell concluded.
