George Russell says Lewis Hamilton’s comment that he might not outqualify George this season was probably made “in the heat of the moment”.

When Lewis Hamilton said during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend that his performance in qualifying inexplicably goes down, adding that he will not be able to outqualify his team-mate George Russell in 2024, many have taken this as an accusation against Mercedes, implying that the team is possibly not treating both drivers the same way.

When George was asked about these comments, he said he believes Lewis did not mean it in that way.

“I think that was probably comments in the heat of the moment because he knows full well that we get the same treatment,” Russell told Channel 4.

“Lewis is a winner, and of course these years have been frustrating for all of us, but especially for him.

“He’s been used to winning every single season he competes in, and hasn’t won in three years.

“So as I said, it’s frustrating for him, it’s frustrating for all of us, but I’m sure he didn’t mean it as it came across,” the Briton concluded.
