George Russell has made his Formula 1 debut in 2019 with Williams and he stayed with the team for three years. He says it would have been perfect to move to Mercedes after two.

George Russell made his Formula 1 debut in 2019 with Williams where he struggled at the back of the grid for a year.

In the years that followed he managed to regularly outperform the car and now after three years with the team he has moved to Mercedes.

“You’re always learning,” Russell told Motorsport-Magazin.com.

“Your natural speed is what it is. It’s not going to get any better. It’s how do I get more out of my engineers, how do I set up the car better, how do I manage the tyres on a cold day in Brazil?

“After year one [at Williams] I would have felt ready. But I’m a better driver now than I was then.”

However, George says two years with Williams and then a move to Mercedes would have been perfect.

“Two years would have been perfect. This year, I would have been more than ready to move up. We signed for three years.

“There was absolutely nothing we could do,” concluded Russell.
