George Russell will start the United States Grand Prix from the pit lane, after Mercedes „had to work on the car overnight during the car’s covered period“.

George Russell qualified for the United States Grand Prix in P6, however, near the end of the session he crashed into the barrier.

After the crash Mercedes did not have enough spare upgraded parts, because they just introduced their latest upgrade package this weekend, so they decided to revert the car to its previous spec, used at the Singapore Grand Prix.

However, this required them to keep the parc ferme covers off overnight while they work on the car, which is a violation of the regulations.

Because of this, the Briton will have to start the race from the pit lane.

“We had to work on the car overnight during the car’s covered period,” a statement from Mercedes read.

“The workload involved in that was due to reverting on specification to what we ran in Singapore,” the statement concluded.

This means that Lewis Hamilton, who was supposed to start the race from P18, will now start from P17.
