The controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award in the sports category.

One could argue that the controversial finish of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was ‘directed’ by race director Michael Masi, who broke the rules which govern the use of the Safety Car, and created a situation that allowed Max Verstappen to win his first world title.

Well, in a move that is not directly related to this controversy, but strangely fitting nonetheless, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has nominated the race in their sports category.

The other nominees in the category are the Tokyo Olympics, the semi-final of the European Football Championship and National Hunt horse race – The Grand National.

This is not the only time that an F1 race has been nominated, as last year the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix was among the nominees. The infamous race featured Romain Grosjean’s horrible fiery crash, which he thankfully survived.
