Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says it is normal that Lewis Hamilton encounters “jealousy and negativity”, but “it is totally irrelevant what somebody else says”.

Despite his enormous success, Lewis Hamilton is often the subject of criticism from some F1 observers and the media. Come to think of it, the criticism is probably coming exactly BECAUSE of his success.

The vast majority of critics always point to Lewis Hamilton being successful ‘only because he has a superior car’. Toto Wolff sees the criticism for what it usually is – “jealousy and negativity”.

“There will always people who see it that way,” the Austrian said.

“The stronger you get the more jealousy and negativity you will encounter. It is totally irrelevant what somebody else says, it is only relevant what he thinks and we think within the team.

“He is clearly the outstanding driver. 100 pole positions and he is growing as a personality on and off track.

“Clearly, there is something he does much better than anybody else otherwise he wouldn’t be a seven-time world champion if that was not the case.

“I think the combination of team and driver needs to function and it has functioned over the last seven years and it continues to be strong,” concluded Mercedes’ team boss.
