Toto Wolff says Lewis Hamilton’s pit stop decisions were made to prevent an undercut, while George Russell “had nothing to lose” so he was put on a one-stop strategy.
Mercedes had a fantastic Belgian Grand Prix, with George Russell winning, followed by Lewis Hamilton in P2.
The race was largely dominated by Hamilton, but ultimately Russell managed to win thanks to a bold one-stop strategy.
Unfortunately, after the race, George Russell’s car was found to be under the weight limit, so he was disqualified, and Lewis inherited the victory.
Before Russell’s DQ was announced, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff explained the differences in strategy between Russell and Hamilton.

“I’d like to have two winners today, but [with Hamilton] we had to cover Leclerc and Norris,” the Austrian told Sky Sports F1.
“We would have been undercut, and that was the call and George had nothing to lose. We were P5, and the one-stop and two-stop strategies were [both] showing P5, so we just kept him out.
“George was very good today, but when you look at the pace, Lewis was also very good today. They both did a fabulous job.
“The strategy played out for George and not for Lewis, but as I said, I’d like to have two winners today,” Wolff concluded.
