Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says he hasn’t “heard any obvious explanations” for Sergio Perez’s gap to Max Verstappen.

Throughout the 2023 season, Max Vestappen has been completely dominating Formula 1, and leaving everybody else far behind.

Surprisingly, one of the drivers who don’t seem to be able to come close to Max is his own team-mate Sergio Perez.

This made many observers question how it is possible for Verstappen to be so much faster than Perez, and they’re both driving the same car.

Some have even suggested that Red Bull does not give Perez the same equipment that it gives Max.

After Dutch Grand Prix Qualifying, which saw Max qualify in P1, and Perez in P7, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, said he finds the deficit odd.

“I mean, Checo is not an idiot,” the Austrian said.

“We have seen in all these years. Checo is a grand prix winner, a multiple grand prix winner. And he was [a winner] at Racing Point, so I cannot comprehend.

“I mean, we’ve seen Max has destroyed every single team-mate that was with him, whether it’s his ability to create a car around himself that is just very tricky to control, but fast if you can, and that makes those gaps.

“The 1.3s… I haven’t heard any obvious explanations, but… odd,” Wolff concluded.
