Toto Wolff says 2022 F1 rules will ‘widely split the field’

In 2022 Formula 1 will introduce radically changed new regulations in an effort to make racing more competitive. Toto Wolff believes it will only further the divide between teams.

Formula 1 rules in 2021 have remained largely the same as in 2020. This seems to have led to teams getting closer together performance wise, which was evident at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, where the top three drivers had very close times in qualifying.

Toto Wolff says he always believed this would happen, and now he thinks the radical rule changes in 2022 will again increase the performance gap between teams.

“We have always said it and it is simply quite logical: if you keep the rules, the field converges,” the Austrian said.

“Because for those at the front, the gains just keep getting smaller, even with more effort. At some point, the teams that are behind will continue the steep form curve and then you have the convergence. If you look at qualifying, it was tip top.

“Just as I felt that was the direction we should go, I promise that next year we will have a situation with a widely split field.

“Maybe Mercedes won’t be in front then, but we will be back to the previous situation,” concluded Wolff.
