Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a “precise summary of the season” for the team.

Mercedes suffered its first mechanical DNF of the 2022 season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, when Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire his car.

George Russell finishing in P5 was also not a result Mercedes was hoping for, so Toto Wolff says the race was “a precise summary” of the team’s 2022 season.

“That was really not good,” the Austrian said.

“All the mistakes you can make, a car that was not at the pace it should have been. Third quickest today, one car breaking down and the other one running out of tyres…

“It was a precise summary of the season, and here we are.

“I think we cooked the tyres in the first few laps. We attacked strongly, the car seemed to be really good and then the front right just gave up.

“Maybe that’s something we should have predicted, but that is the consequence.

“We knew that Abu Dhabi was going to be a difficult one for the car, so at least the correlation is good.

“Brazil was just spectacular, dominating from the beginning to the end with the one-two, and at least we ticked the box with a race win,” Wolff concluded.
