Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff reiterates that former Mercedes engine boss Andy Cowell “doesn’t seem” to be going to Red Bull, but “in this sport we have seen many black swans”.

With Red Bull approaching Mercedes staff to get them to join their new engine division, many are wondering if former Mercedes High Performance Powertrains boss Andy Cowell could be next.

Cowell has left Mercedes last year to pursue interests outside of Formula 1. At the Monaco Grand Prix Thursday press conference Wolff said he speaks to the Briton regularly, and he doesn’t seem to be interested in returning to the sport.

“I speak to Andy every week about different things and for me it doesn’t seem that he is going to Red Bull,” the Austrian said.

“But in this sport we have seen many black swans, so at the moment, what I think is he’s not going there.”

Wolff was then asked how much of a surprise it would be, if Cowell did indeed join Red Bull.

“It would be a big surprise because it would mean it’s different to what we have discussed,” Mercedes’ team boss said.

“But there is nothing stopping him from taking any decision, whether he continues on his entrepreneurial journey or returns to Formula 1 in a different role.”
