After Kimi Antonelli’s first race win, Toto Wolff says Mercedes has “a car that is capable of winning” and both of their drivers “have equal opportunity” to fight for the title.
Mercedes’ start to the 2026 season has been amazing. The team topped all qualifying session, and finished the first two races with a 1-2 victory.
Interestingly, the Australian Grand Prix was won by George Russell (who also won the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint Race), while the Chinese Grand Prix was won by Kimi Antonelli.
Asked whether he was worried about tension building between Antonelli and Russell, as the championship heats up, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said the team will allow both drivers to fight for the title.
“At the moment [we have] a car that is capable of winning, both [drivers] have equal opportunity,” Wolff said.

Toto added that Antonelli has a great role model in Russell.
“You can never learn raw speed, [Antonelli] has that, and there’s not many that have that.
“But to become a really big champion… it needs the maturity, the personality, needs the humility, the intelligence, the empathy around the team…
“There’s like 20 factors that matter to become a great world champion, but there’s one you can’t learn, and that’s the talent,” Wolff concluded.
