With Honda leaving Formula 1 after 2021, Red Bull stated it would be willing to continue working on Honda’s engine themselves, if an engine development freeze is put in place.
Honda’s departure from Formula 1 means only three engine manufacturers will remain: Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault.
Red Bull made it clear it is not willing to become a customer team again and therefore would be willing to take over Honda’s engine operation and continue working on their own engines. For this to happen, they want an engine development freeze to be instituted, or else they will leave the sport altogether.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said on numerous occasions he would support an engine development freeze and now he says everyone should do everything they can to make it possible for Red Bull to remain in Formula 1.
“If the freeze is necessary to keep Red Bull Honda in business, we will support it,” the Austrian told RTL.
“We all have to try together to keep the manufacturers in Formula 1. The Red Bull Honda project is very ambitious, but I think they can do that.
“That’s why we are basically for a freeze.”
