Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says it would be his “responsibility” to make sure Valtteri Bottas “has a great future”, if Mercedes decides to let him go.

With the debate over who will be Lewis Hamilton’s team-mate for 2022 raging on, two strong candidates have emerged – Valtteri Bottas and Mercedes junior driver George Russell.

While it is still unknown which way Mercedes will lean, in a recent interview Toto Wolff hinted he would help Bottas find another seat, if he is not retained.

“If we were to come to the situation where we wanted to give someone else a go then it is not only my relationship with him, but also my responsibility that he has a great future,” the Austrian said.

“He deserves that. He has been a team-mate of the best Formula 1 driver of all-time and [in] that [position it] is not always very easy to shine, but he is fantastic.”

And now for some rumours. The word has been going around that Bottas is already exploring his options with other teams (which is nothing unusual, and is a smart thing to do).

Motorsport-Total.com and Autosport both claim they learned that talks have been already opened with Alfa Romeo.

Wolff was recently asked if the Finn could soon be driving an Alfa Romeo Giulia as his company car, and the Austrian gave a cheeky answer.

“A Quadrifoglio like that is a nice car,” Wolff said with a smile.
