When asked if he prefers finishing second in the Constructors’ Championship, or finishing third, but with a race win, Toto Wolff said in both options you are still a loser.
In 2023 Mercedes managed to beat Ferrari for second in the Constructors’ Championship, however, the German team failed to win any races, while the Italian outfit managed to score a race win.
When Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was asked whether he would prefer to finish the season in P2, or finish in P3, but score a race win, he was very blunt in his response.
“Both losers,” the Austrian said.

“It’s better to be second for the money and the bonuses and it is better to be P3 because of the wind-tunnel time.
“Ferrari has 7% more than us though, and we would have had 14% more than Red Bull if we finished third], but you can’t get what you always want.
“You want the bonuses and the extra wind-tunnel time,” Wolff concluded.
