Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says “you can’t reverse engineer the performance of the car and say: ‘We’re looking at Red Bull and this is what we want our car to look like.’”
With the upgrades Mercedes introduced in the last few races, the team appears to have come to grips with its difficult car and managed to close the gap to the frontrunners.
Team boss Toto Wolff says this couldn’t have been done by simply copying Red Bull.
“There is there’s no such thing as the ‘silver bullet’ in Formula 1,” the Austrian said.
“It was a constant work of understanding what was wrong, and I know that everybody got tired by this answer, but you can’t reverse engineer the performance of the car and say: ‘We’re looking at Red Bull and this is what we want our car to look like.’

“You really need to work your way through the problems.”
Toto then explained how the team managed to solve their biggest issue.
“It didn’t seem to correlate between the tunnel and the track, and the track and the car were difficult to drive right over. It was not good. We had the bouncing or bottoming coming back.
“Then we had a clear indication of what we were missing in the jigsaw, and we put the piece in and I think now it’s gone,” Wolff concluded.
