Toto Wolff says Aston Martin “gained two seconds in half a year and their car is half ours, from the engine, gearbox and rear suspension, and using the same wind tunnel”.
Aston Martin has been the biggest surprise of 2023. The team already impressed in Pre-Season Testing, and then even more so when Fernando Alonso topped Bahrain Grand Prix FP2 and 3.
Ultimately, in Qualifying, Alonso finished ahead of both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
Because Aston Martin is powered by a Mercedes engine, and the two teams share a technical partnership, Toto Wolff thinks Mercedes can learn a lot from the British team’s example.

“We started last year with six tenths and we started this year with six tenths and that is the reality,” Wolff said.
“Our aim, while being humble about it, is to fight for victories and the world championship, so whatever is between us and pole position is less relevant, because now Fernando is there – we can only take our hats off for what they achieved.
“They gained two seconds in half a year and their car is half ours, from the engine, gearbox and rear suspension and using the same wind tunnel.
“There are a lot of parallels and we need to acknowledge that they have done an outstanding job,” the Austrian concluded.
