Valtteri Bottas says it’s “surprising” to see Mercedes struggling, but “it’s also nice to be able to battle with them”.
In 2022 Valtteri Bottas moved to Alfa Romeo, after five years of driving for Mercedes. What he didn’t expect was that he will even outperform his former team in qualifying at times.
After Lewis Hamilton’s surprise exit from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Qualifying in Q1, the Finn gave his thoughts on Mercedes’ troubles.
“It’s weird to see,” Bottas said.
“I would guess he had some kind of issue, I don’t know. It is surprising to see them struggling, but it’s also nice to be able to battle with them.”

Considering how well Alfa Romeo has been performing so far, Bottas says he is happy he joined the team.
“I think this was kind of the best case scenario for our first season together that I could ever imagine, with the information I had.
“I’m really happy with the decision I made, and I’m happy overall as well.
“So yeah, enjoying it,” he concluded.
