Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Toto Wolff was asked whether Lewis Hamilton had any say in the position swap between James Allison and Mike Elliott.
Shockwaves were sent through the Formula 1 media when Mercedes announced they decided to return the team’s Chief Technical Officer James Allison to his previous position of Technical Director, while TD Mike Elliot assumed the CTO role.
It was later revealed by Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff that Elliott and Allison themselves suggested that the switch be made.
This of course didn’t prevent the media from asking Wolff if Lewis Hamilton had any say in the decision.
“No it was a team decision, it has nothing to do with the drivers or anybody else,” the Austrian said ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

“It is literally Mike and James talking about what would be best for this organisation and they came and said ‘we have thought about that, what is your opinion’.”
Toto then explained the difference between the two roles.
“So a simple explanation, the Technical Director is the gladiator on the field fighting with his troops.
“The CTO is Caesar on the horse, overlooking the field and giving the strategic decisions – that is Mike,” Wolff concluded.
