After the Canadian Grand Prix, Toto Wolff says “at the beginning of the year we would have been murdered on this kind of circuit”.

After Lewis Hamilton scored a solid P3 at the Canadian Grand Prix, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says he is pleased with the team’s progress.

“[We’re on a] positive and encouraging trajectory,” the Austrian told Viaplay.

“Our new car works well. We knew that Canada is one of the more difficult ones for us and coming out in P3 [is] a solid [result], not too far away from Max.

“I think he backed off a little bit at the end, but [we were] much closer than we would have expected.

“At the beginning of the year we would have been murdered on this kind of circuit.

Asked where Mercedes has the best chance to win a race this season, Toto said: “Silverstone.”

Toto also commented on George Russell‘s crash into the barrier after he rode a kerb in Turn 9. The Briton picked up a puncture and destroyed his front wing, and ultimately had to retire his car later in the race.

“I think he had this massive kerb ride and then maybe he tried to really still keep it lit on that corner and then [went] in the wall. He’s pushing hard.

“Yeah, this car is just still a little bit of a difficult one,” Wolff concluded.
