Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says he was sure Mercedes would have an easy time passing the McLarens after the Safety Car period.
After the Safety Car period in the final stages of the British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton was chasing Lando Norris for P2, but could not overtake the fellow Briton.
The puzzling thing is that Norris was able to hold Hamilton off, even though he was on hard tyres, and Lewis was on softs.
George Russell also had trouble passing Oscar Piastri, and ultimately finished behind him in P5.
After the race Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff admitted that he too thought the McLarens would be easy prey.

“To be honest when the Safety Car was deployed I was pretty sure, if not convinced, that we would be eating up the McLarens and finish with a P2 and P3 or maybe even challenge up the road,” the Austrian said.
“So you see just how strong their car was. We could have had a go in the first few laps, but they both raced a very strong hand.
“And with their efficiency and top speed through the high-speed corners and on the straights, there was just no way in passing them,” Wolff concluded.
