McLaren CEO Zak Brown says he doesn’t “remember a year that has been so toxic between two drivers and teams since the Senna/Prost era”.

Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost had legendary title battles that often turned ugly, especially during the time when they were team-mates at McLaren.

Not only did the two drivers battle it out on the track, but there was a serious division within the team, with each side of the garage pitted against each other.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown says the 2021 title battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen had the same level of ‘toxicity’.

“It’s been an incredible year from first to last place on the grid,” Brown told Motorsport.com.

“There have been a lot of fights, starting with the battle between Lewis and Max for the title.

“I don’t remember a year that has been so toxic between two drivers and teams since the Senna/Prost era.”

The problems spilled over to their teams too, with team bosses Toto Wolff and Christian Horner often engaging in a volatile war of words.

“They definitely have a real repulsion for each other,” Brown said of Wolff and Horner.

However, Brown ultimately thinks the drama that came out of the fight was good for Formula 1.

“I don’t think Formula 1 has ever been this exciting. And I think it’s going to get even better,” he concluded.
