Fernando Alonso says it’s hard to compare George Russell to other young Formula 1 drivers, because Mercedes is so dominant.

George Russell impressed everybody in his first outing for Mercedes at the Sakhir Grand Prix. The Briton got the opportunity because Lewis Hamilton was forced to miss the race due to COVID-19.

Taking into consideration Russell’s fantastic drive, Fernando Alonso was asked how he thought the young Briton compared to other young F1 drivers.

“The Russell case is striking in explaining this version of F1,” Alonso told RAI Sport.

“In five days, not a hundred, he went from last to first. All without a divine touch, without meditating in Tibet or sh*t. It was enough just to get into a Mercedes.

“Evaluating the drivers is complicated. Of course, if we think about who Hamilton or [Valtteri] Bottas see more often in their rear view mirrors, we find [Max] Verstappen.

“[Charles] Leclerc is an exceptional talent but to really measure him it takes a few years,” concluded the Spaniard.

It wasn’t the first time Alonso highlighted Mercedes’ dominance. In December he said he thought Lewis Hamilton owed more to Mercedes than the other way around, when it comes to their success.
