Sky Sports F1 lead commentator David Croft says “if the rules had been adhered to as they are written”, Lewis Hamilton would have won the 2021 F1 title.
More and more mainstream Formula 1 personalities don’t mince words anymore when it comes to the controversial ending of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Now, Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft has openly said Lewis Hamilton was robbed of a race and title victory in the last race of the 2021 season.
“Lewis has taken much-needed time away from the public eye to process, digest and eventually get over what happened in Abu Dhabi,” Croft said.
“Yes, he was robbed of the championship through no fault of his own and by mistakes that happened elsewhere.
“He should have won that race. If the rules had been adhered to as they are written, he would have won that race – we wouldn’t have had that last lap.”

Although Hamilton has returned to the public eye, following his period of media silence, it is still being reported that his return to Formula 1 in 2022 will depend on the results of the FIA’s inquiry into the finish of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Croft, however, believes we will see the Briton on the grid in March.
“Knowing Lewis Hamilton as I do, he’s not a man that would want to leave his racing career at the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi.
“He will want to come back and prove he is still the greatest driver of all time, so I’m expecting him to be on the grid.
“Although at times this winter, I’m sure Lewis Hamilton did think maybe this could be the end, but I think he’s not so much changed his mind but realised his heart is very much in racing and winning and performing at the highest standard that he has done for so many seasons in Formula 1,” Croft concluded.
