Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso says George Russell might be able to put “more pressure” on Lewis Hamilton, but Lewis has shown “he can always perform, with or without pressure”.
George Russell is coming to Mercedes in 2022, and many are asking the question if he could pose a serious challenge to Lewis Hamilton’s dominance.
One person, however, is not certain that the young Briton could immediately challenge the seven-time champion. And that one person is Lewis’ 2007 team-mate Fernando Alonso.
“George might be able to put more pressure on Lewis,” Alonso said when asked by Sky Sports.

“Valtteri [Bottas] hasn’t been in a position to push in the last two years, and if George can do that the whole team will benefit.”
However, Alonso knows first-hand that it will not be that easy.
“On the other hand, Lewis has shown many times that he can always perform, with or without pressure.
“George is fast, but Lewis is Lewis, so we’ll see,” concluded the 2005 and 2006 F1 champion.
