Frederic Vasseur says “Lewis was an important symbol” for Ferrari, “because it sends a positive message to the paddock”, and he inadvertently reveals the length of Lewis’ contract.

Lewis Hamilton will join Ferrari in 2025, in a move that has shocked the Formula 1 world earlier this year.

While the team announced it was a multi-year deal, they never explicitly revealed the length of the contract.

However, now, in a talk with the Financial Times, Ferrari’s team boss Frederic Vasseur seemingly confirmed it will run until the end of 2027.

“He had to make a choice: ‘Where do I have the biggest chance to win the World Championship in 2025, ’26, ’27?’ Vasseur said.

“He [Lewis] said: ‘Ferrari.’”

Vasseur added Lewis coming to Ferrari shows his confidence in the team, which could attract other big names to join the team.

“Lewis was an important symbol because it sends a positive message to the paddock.

“[It is] also the best way to attract good people. We have good people at Ferrari, but I want to reinforce.

“Coming to Italy, it’s a different story. You have to move the family; it’s a change of life.

“The move of Lewis will help us,” the Frenchman concluded.

Considering how the future of former Red Bull Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey is currently F1’s hot topic, it’s very likely that Vasseur was thinking primarily of him when he made these statements.
