George Russell says his British Grand Prix retirement happened because of a “water leak”, but “the engine’s been saved”, and will be used in Hungary.

George Russell started the British Grand Prix from pole, but unfortunately on Lap 34 he was told to retire the car. He was running in P4 at the time.

Afterwards, Mercedes revealed the retirement was caused by a suspected water system issue.

Later, the team’s Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin said the team decided to retire the car to save the power unit.

Now, George says the power unit has been saved, and will be used in Hungary.

“Fortunately the engine’s been saved and we’ll be using that,” the Briton said.

“I think we’ll be using the same engine this weekend to be honest. But yeah, it was just a water leak, the engine wasn’t getting enough water.

“The team recognised it from the second or third lap of the race that the temperatures were just getting hotter and hotter and we were losing power.

“So yeah, it was a real shame, but as Lewis said, we’re in a great place right now and we’re going to be fighting again.

“And I’m confident we’ll have the opportunity once more,” Russell concluded.
