Lewis Hamilton says he “wasn’t aware that George was experiencing” online abuse, and adds his team-mate “does nothing but his best every weekend for the team”.
In recent weeks, a portion of Lewis Hamilton’s fans have become very loud in their suggestions that Lewis is being treated unfairly by Mercedes.
Some are even saying that Mercedes could be doing something to purposely slow Lewis down. Unfortunately, cases of online abuse aimed at George Russell have also been reported.
When asked about this ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, Lewis completely dismissed any suggestions that Mercedes is doing anything against him, and proceeded to defend his team-mate.
“If you look up the years we’ve always been a strong team, we’ve worked really hard together,” Hamilton said.
“It’s easy to get emotional. I commented on the last race about my performance for example. We need support, not negativity.

“I wasn’t aware that George was experiencing it [abuse on social media]. He does nothing but his best every weekend for the team. He can’t be faulted at all.”
As for Mercedes’ subpar performances in the early parts of the seasons, which led to some of the criticism, Lewis said:
“There can always be things done better within the team. That comes through communication.
“But we’re all in the same boat — we’re all working hard together and we all want to finish on a high.
“We owe that to our long-term relationship,” the Briton concluded.
