Lewis Hamilton says he is “really, really surprised” that the FIA’s verdict over his collision with Max Verstappen said he “could have done more to avoid the collision”.

While fighting for P3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were involved in a collision.

More specifically, while trying to pass Lewis at Turn 1, Max braked too deep and his rear tyre collided with Lewis’ front, which sent the Red Bull flying out of the track.

Max was able to return to the track, but he dropped back down the order and ultimately finished the race in P5.

The stewards immediately announced an investigation into the collision, and later summoned both drivers.

Ultimately they decided that “no driver was predominantly to blame”, so they will not be taking any further action. However, they did note that Lewis “could have done more to avoid the collision”.

Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, Lewis said he was very surprised by this.

“Yes, very much so,” the Briton said.

“I was really, really surprised by it. I think already I was very relaxed about the situation. I just said, it’s just a racing incident, let’s just move on.

“But considering one car was in control, one car was not in control at the time. And if you look at the replay, I’m very, very far from, at the end of the whole move.

“I’m very, very far from the apex. So, I’ve left, there’s a lot of room on the right-hand side.

“So, I was very, very surprised,” Hamilton concluded.
