Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko says he doesn’t fear losing Max Verstappen to Mercedes if Lewis Hamilton decides not to return to Formula 1.
The speculation regarding Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 future following the controversial ending of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is still going strong.
For this reason Autorevue asked Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko if there is any fear that Max Verstappen could move to Mercedes if Lewis decided to leave the sport.
“I do not think that Max will leave us then,” Marko said.
“The events at Silverstone have left too big a crack, especially with Jos. I think that makes him less likely to switch sides.”
Marko is referencing the collision between Hamilton and Verstappen at the 2021 British Grand Prix, which ended with the Dutch driver crashing into the barrier.

Afterwards Verstappen was taken to the hospital for precautionary checks, while Hamilton went on to win the race. The subsequent celebration drew the ire from Max’s father Jos.
“You don’t celebrate your victory with such euphoria when your colleague is still in the hospital,” the elder Verstappen said after the race.
“And as for Toto Wolff, we have had good contact for years, he kept calling and smeared honey around our mouths. I think everyone knows why.
“He didn’t get in touch yesterday. Now he no longer needs to call.”
What both Marko and Verstappen fail to acknowledge is the fact that Mercedes already got word that Max was fine, before the celebrations commenced.
