Herbert thinks Mercedes could have an advantage over Red Bull

Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert thinks Mercedes’ decisions in 2021 could make it “happen again for Lewis” in 2022.

Last year Mercedes decided to shift their focus (and budget) from their 2021 car into their 2022 challenger early on in the season.

Mercedes’ last significant upgrade came at Silverstone, while Red Bull continued to develop their car basically until the end of the season.

While this gave the Austrian team an advantage in 2021, it could prove to be a big disadvantage this year, because Mercedes’ car, in theory, has had more time and resources poured into its development.

Sky Sports F1’s analyst Johnny Herbert believes this could definitely be the case

“I think Mercedes did so well last year, because of the budget cap coming into effect,” Herbert said.

“That’s really something, [the fact] that they didn’t spend so much last year – I think their big upgrade was at Silverstone.

“While Red Bull seemed to do one [upgrade at] more or less every single race that we went to.

“So maybe there is going to be a sort of pushing that budget towards what [Mercedes are] going to be using this year.

“I think Mercedes… I think it could happen again for Lewis [in 2022],” the Briton concluded.
