Hulkenberg confirms Mercedes role, Gutierrez becomes Brand Ambassador

After much speculation Nico Hulkenberg confirmed he will be a reserve driver for both Mercedes and Aston Martin, while Mercedes announced Esteban Gutierrez as their new Brand and Business Ambassador.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff recently said that it was only a matter of time before Nico Hulkenberg’s role with Mercedes is announced. Well, today, in an interview with Servus TV, the German announced he will be serving as a reserve driver for both Mercedes and Aston Martin in select races.

This means the Hulk will be joining Mercedes’ current reserve drivers Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries. The news is yet to be confirmed by Mercedes.

“This year I will be working as a substitute driver for Aston [Martin] and also for Mercedes in select races,” Hulkenberg said.

In other news, Mercedes announced that their former reserve driver Esteban Gutierrez will serve as Brand and Business Ambassador for the team. Here is the full press release:

“The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team is pleased to announce that Esteban Gutierrez has been appointed as a Brand and Business Ambassador. Esteban will continue to attend race weekends and promotional events, and in his new role, he will also work with other areas of the team, including management, commercial, and marketing departments, with a particular focus on strengthening commercial relationships in the Latin American market.

“Esteban has been with Mercedes since 2018 as a simulator, reserve, and development driver. He has also been increasingly involved with the team’s commercial activities in recent years, supporting the development of brand partnerships through relationship-building and promotional events.”
