Lewis Hamilton says “two laps behind a safety car where there is no possibility to gain or lose a place, or provide entertainment to fans, isn’t racing”.

After the shameful events of the Belgian Grand Prix, which ended with drivers driving two laps behind a Safety car, before the race was stopped and the winner declared, Lewis Hamilton took to social media to voice his displeasure with what had transpired.

“Today was a farce and the only people to lose out are the fans who have paid good money to watch us race,” wrote the Briton.

“Of course you can’t do anything about the weather, but we have sophisticated equipment to tell us what’s going on and it was clear the weather wasn’t going to let up.

“We were sent out for one reason and one reason only. Two laps behind a safety car where there is no possibility to gain or lose a place or provide entertainment to fans isn’t racing.

“We should have just called it quits, not risked the drivers and most importantly refunded the fans who are the heart of our sport.”

In a post-race media session Lewis elaborated on why he believes this was a calculated decision on the part of Formula 1.

“There was no point at which we could race, so there wasn’t a race. But there is a rule for it to be a legal race, it has to be I think a minimum of two laps.

“So they knew that and they sent us out for two laps behind the safety car. And that activates a bunch of things — I don’t know all of the politics in the background.

“The fans should get their money back, I think, and I don’t know if by doing those two laps means they don’t… We have better values than that as a sport,” concluded the seven-time champion.
