Toto Wolff: “We clearly shouldn’t have started”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff is not happy with the decision to start the Belgian Grand Prix for two laps. There are talks with race control.

The Belgian Grand Prix has been stopped after the formation lap due to heavy rain. However, more than two hours later it has been restarted under even worse condition so that the cars could do two laps under a Safety Car.

After that the race was definitely stopped. This was obviously done because two laps are required so that the race and its results could be official.

Lewis Hamilton pointed out this was done for money reasons, but it also meant that drivers were awarded half points, and Max Verstappen got a race win.

Toto Wolff says it was the right call to not start the race, but he’s not happy with the sham restart.

“These half points are annoying, but that’s the way the regulations are,” the Austrian told ORF after the ‘race’.

“It was the right choice not to start the race, but the procedure behind the Safety Car could probably have been omitted.”

Wolff reveals that the team bosses have all went to race control to discuss these decisions.

“We now have to go and see how it went. All the team bosses are going to race control now anyway.

“We clearly shouldn’t have started. We would have been spared the procedure behind the safety car then.”
