After receiving two penalties during the Qatar Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton insisted that Mercedes allow him to retire his car, but he ultimately finished the race.
The Qatar Grand Prix was especially difficult for Lewis Hamilton. Not only did he start from P6, but he then received two penalties during the race.
The first five-second penalty was issued for a false start, and then later he received a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pitlane.
When Lewis was informed of his second penalty, he asked the team to retire the car.
“Retire the car, retire the car,” Lewis said.
“Negative,” answered his race engineer Peter Bonnington – Bono.

Lewis, however, was adamant that the team allow him to retire the car.
“I’m switching off when I get in there, mate,” he said.
He was then informed that if they do retire the car, he would fail to serve the penalty, and then he would receive a five-second penalty to be served at the next race in Abu Dhabi.
Lewis ultimately served the penalty and returned to the track, but then Mercedes told him that he can now retire the car.
Lewis, however, finished the race and managed to pass Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda to finish in P12.
