Lewis Hamilton says he is “grateful” that he is in contention for his eighth F1 title, and talks about Mercedes’ Abu Dhabi Grand Prix chances.
Ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton was asked how it felt to be in contention for his eighth F1 title.
“We’re in unmarked territory as a team,” Lewis said.
“And obviously with the year that we’ve had, I’m sure so many people would’ve ruled us out being this close right at the end.
“So I think it has been an incredible group effort from everyone back at the factory and at the track. And no one has ever done eight before, but I feel grateful.
“And I remember what it is also like going for your first, so I’ve had those experiences and the rollercoasters of emotions that you go through.”
When he was asked about Red Bull taking the win in Abu Dhabi in 2020, Lewis noted that the race was his return to F1 after he was forced to miss a race due to COVID-19.

“I was just reminded that I was recovering from COVID, so I wasn’t a hundred percent yet,” he told Sky Sports F1.
“The places where we were weak are not there anymore so that’s positive, but [Red Bull] will still be strong”.
Lewis also gave his comments on the fact that the last race of the season will be available on free-to-air TV in the UK on Channel 4 and in the Netherlands on Ziggo Sport.
“I grew up in an era when it was free. And remember being able to turn on many years ago. I know that’s the way the world has gone obviously with pay-TV.
“But I think that’s amazing [that the finale will be screened for free]. Particularly in a time that we live in right now where people have been affected so heavily by COVID – people lost jobs, businesses –and so I think that’s great.
“It’s a great gift, I think, at this point of the year for people to be able to watch a sport and not have to worry how they were going to be able to watch it,” concluded the seven-time champion.
