Mercedes confirms that George Russell’s engine failed at the Australian Grand Prix, because it ‘ingested debris’. They also reveal the extent of the damage.
Mercedes suffered its first engine failure of the season at the Australian Grand Prix. The German power unit has been one of the most reliable on the grid in 2022, so the failure was a cause for concern for the team and its fans.
However, Mercedes has now confirmed that the unit failed because it ‘ingested debris’. More specifically, according to Auto Motor und Sport, an ‘unusual component’ had entered the engine’s combustion process, which led to loss of power.

Unfortunately, AMuS reports that the turbocharger and the MGU-H were broken in the incident, and other parts of the engine are still being investigated.
Speedcafe.com reports they received word from Mercedes that “all the mechanical elements of the PU have been lost from the pool”, while “only the electronic elements have been salvaged”.
This means George can definitely expect an engine related penalty later in the season.
