Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and new FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem have met in London to discuss the future of F1 and other matters.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been elected president of the FIA in December and he has used the first month of his presidency to get acquainted with all of the major players and situations in various championships governed by the organisation.

The most important of these is Formula 1, so on Tuesday Ben Sulayem met with Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali to discuss the series’ future and other pressing matters.

This is the first significant meeting between the two since Ben Sulayem became president. They met at the Formula 1’s headquarters on St James’s Market in London.

The meeting was followed by a short message from Domenicali, shared on F1’s official media channels.

“I was delighted to welcome the new president of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, to F1 headquarters in London today,” the Italian said.

“We are both focused on advancing the sport and continuing the positive momentum that exists in F1.”

Although the details of the discussions are as of yet unknown, it is widely believed that one of the topics was the FIA’s ongoing investigation into the controversial finish of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which saw Max Verstappen become the 2021 champion after race director Michael Masi ignored the rules of the Safety Car in the final laps of the race.

The issue remains a top priority for Ben Sulayem as the FIA aims to release a full report of its findings by March 18, the same day the first and second free practice sessions for the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix will he held.

Just a day after the meeting, on January 19, the FIA’s Sporting Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet and is expected to discuss the use of the Safety Car in Abu Dhabi.

Ben Sulayem has also recently met with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, but the details of their discussions are also not known publicly.
