Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says Lewis Hamilton does not have a problem with losing to George Russell as long as there’s “fair competition on the track”.

In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport Toto Wolff was asked if Mercedes will be able to “control” a possible “internal duel” between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell in 2022.

“I would wish that we had two lightning-fast drivers fighting for victory,” Wolff was clear.

“And if not, then we need these drivers to get our car back on the winning track.”

He was then asked if Lewis could have a problem with losing to a young driver such as Russell.

“The Lewis’ size [as a sportsman] is often wrongly questioned,” the Austrian said.

“Even after the events in Abu Dhabi, he immediately congratulated Max. Lewis only wants one thing: fair competition on the track.

“We will deliver that,” Wolff concluded.

Hamilton basically said the same thing back in 2021 when it was announced that he will have a new team-mate.

“When I joined Mercedes in 2013 I said to [team principal at the time] Ross Brawn I just want equal opportunity,” Hamilton said.

“That’s the most rewarding position to be in, because if you do the work and you do succeed you know you have done your job against whoever it is at their best.

“Winning when someone’s wings are clipped – that’s not something that interests me,” the Briton concluded.
