Red Bull has accused Mercedes numerous times of their car being illegal. Toto Wolff says his team is “struggling to keep up with commenting on the rumours”.
The on-track war between Red Bull and Mercedes has spilled into a war of words off the track too. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says such things are to be expected.
“I don’t feel any positive or negative emotions about this,” the Austrian said.
“I’m neutral about it and I don’t feel any extra pressure because of these circumstances. As team boss I obviously want to defend my drivers and my team.
“Then sometimes some emotion comes into play.”
Wolff also explains that when you are engaged in such a fierce fight, it’s hard to be very friendly with your competition.
“The rivalry between Mercedes and Red Bull is simply too big. You can’t expect someone to have dinner with someone from the other team. It’s quite normal to see it like that.”

As for Red Bull’s constant accusations that certain parts of Mercedes’ car are illegal, Wolff says the team is struggling to keep track of everything that has been said.
“Have they shown some data or photographs about the straight-line performance,” asked the Austrian.
“It’s a track here that is less power-sensitive, and interestingly I think they’ve just done a good job – their straight-line speed with the big wing [high downforce] is identical to ours.
“So yeah, I’m happy that they are happy. Let’s go to Saudi Arabia and maybe we’ll hear some comments again. In a way, the debates that are being kicked off or launched, I cannot follow any more.
“I have taken the decision for myself and the team that we’re struggling to keep up with commenting on the rumours that are being made from that side,” Mercedes’ team boss concluded.
