Toto Wolff chimes in on the debate on whether Red Bull has “made a step backwards”, and says “the most important” thing is that their advantage is “shrinking”.
Mercedes’ Technical Director James Allison recently said that it looks like Red Bull’s recent “upgrade was a downgrade”.
Team boss Toto Wolff says he is not sure about that, but there’s no doubt that the gap between Red Bull and the rest of the field is shinking.
“The last few races were more difficult for them, and I think everybody has been making good steps forward,” the Austrian said.
“Today, there were two or three teams that could have potentially won the race, maybe us, not quite.

“I don’t know whether they made a step backwards, but the most important is that it’s shrinking.”
As for Mercedes, after a good result in Canada, Toto believes the team is finally on the right path.
“I hope it’s not track-related. Montreal is the outlier also that mid-range corner speed and change of directions, but overall, the driver said the car is now in a space where they can push it.
“They have more confidence, and therefore, obviously, everything becomes much easier,” he concluded.
