Toto Wolff says Mercedes “didn’t want to have Carlos wait” for their decision on who their driver for 2025 is going to be, as they “want to reinvent ourselves a little bit going forward”.
Ever since it was announced that Lewis Hamilton will go to Ferrari in 2025, the whole Formula 1 world has been wondering who will succeed him at Mercedes.
One of the drivers most often talked about is Carlos Sainz, the man who Lewis is replacing at Ferrari.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, however, says that Sainz will not be the one.
“I think first of all, Carlos deserves a top seat,” Wolff said.
“He’s done a fantastic job. But for us, we’ve embarked on a route now to say… we want to reinvent ourselves a little bit going forward and Kimi Antonelli definitely plays a part in that.
“We haven’t taken a decision yet for next year but we didn’t want to have Carlos wait as well because he needs to take the decisions for himself.

“That’s just fair, he’s doing a super job,” added Wolff.
In a talk with Sky Sports Germany, Toto reiterated Mercedes’ commitment to its junior driver Kimi Antonelli.
“We just want to concentrate on Andrea Kimi Antonelli. He is our future. We want to work for the young drivers. We also said that to Carlos.”
However, the Austrian also said Antonelli in a Mercedes in 2025 is far from a sure thing.
“We haven’t made a decision yet, there are others that could also be of interest to us,” Wolff concluded.
