Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says Mercedes is “flat out on 2022” and doesn’t plan on introducing any major updates for their 2021 car.
With major Formula 1 rules overhaul planned for 2022, along with the newly introduced spending cap, the teams need to carefully choose where they will allocate their resources.
The choice has to be made between developing the 2021 car or going all-in on their new 2022 challenger. Toto Wolff says Mercedes is focusing more on next year.
“We are obviously planning on churning along and trying to bring tweaks to the car, but we are flat out on 2022,” the Austrian told Sky Sports F1.

“There will be tiny tweaks that will be coming. But it’s more, I think, understanding the concept of this year’s car where we are looking for laptime gain.”
With Red Bull presenting a serious challenge for the 2021 title, Wolff was asked if he believes this could make the Austrian team a favourite to win the championship?
“It could well be, but we are confident that we can fight for it,” concluded Mercedes’ team boss.
