After the controversy of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Toto Wolff said it is not certain that Lewis Hamilton will return to Formula 1 in 2022.

In a press conference held after Mercedes announced they will not proceed with their appeal of the decisions that were made at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, that basically took away Lewis Hamilton’s almost guaranteed eight championship win, Toto Wolff said it was not certain that the Briton will return to Formula 1 in 2022.

At the FIA Prize-Giving Gala Max Verstappen was asked how bad it would be for the sport if Lewis decided to leave.

“Of course, I can understand that the first few days after a race like that, you’re not happy,” the Dutch driver said.

“But you should also understand that this is racing, at the end of the day, and these things can happen to you.

“I think he should just look back at what he has achieved already and that should give him a lot of comfort – that drive to keep on going.

“He is still trying to challenge for that eighth title, and for sure he can do that again next year, so I don’t see any reason why to give up or stop now.”

Max also gave his comments on how it felt to wait for his championship to be confirmed after Mercedes lodged two protests immediately after the race and later an intention to appeal.

“I mean, there were two protests coming against us [after the race], [so there] was a little bit of a longer wait.

“Nevertheless, we were still celebrating and then, once there was the all clear on that night, we had another celebration, so we basically had a double celebration!

“Since then, I haven’t really thought about it too much. Of course, this morning, when I heard the news, I was happy about it, but I also expected it,” concluded Verstappen.
