George Russell says he wasn’t surprised by Lewis Hamilton’s performance level in 2022, because he “expected him to be exceptional in all areas”.

In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, George Russell was asked if he found it easier than team-mate Lewis Hamilton to get used to Mercedes’ problematic 2022 car, considering how he spent three years in a very uncompetitive Williams.

“Certainly my results have improved while his have gotten worse [compared to the last several years],” Russell said.

“But Lewis is hungry. This challenge motivates him even more. He will be there for many years to come. I don’t see him slowing down.

“The energy, the fire that blazes within him is extraordinary. That pulls me along.”

The Briton was then asked what most surprised him about Hamilton, since he joined Mercedes.

“I wouldn’t call it a surprise. I expected him to be exceptional in all areas. You would expect nothing less from a driver of this caliber.

“He is very good with people. He surprised me more with his off-track side. I already knew the racer.

“I’ve watched him all my life,” Russell concluded.
